[ w/Damo Suzuki]
Imagine, if you will, the state of this show, Damo Suzuki and us, in the Spiegletent. You just couldn’t make this stuff up.
We’re quite happy, and it gives us and excuse to get back together and play, which is something we haven’t done since John left, although we’ve been recording, in secret, but not simultaneously, down in Limerick. The open salvos of the new album are being tapped into computers. This at least is progress.
Before this Damo has ordered us not to rehearse. The way he wants it, he’d like if we’d never met, or better still, didn’t even play an instrument, but not having been in the same room together in so long, we stick in a sneaky run. We’ve no room any more, as the Isaac Butt is now in the throes of renovation, so Whelans quite amiably allow us to stand around the venue and crank out some noise til the band that are playing that night turn, and look a bit perplexed. We don’t do anything specific, so we’re not actually going into this gig with pre-written improv or anything, just warming up.
Seems it may yet all be in vain as the little man isn’t there, and doesn’t seem to be contactable, until finally someone calls and says that they’re driving from Limerick and there’s been some massive delay. Again, probably all part of Damos plan that we meet literally five minutes before we’re due to perform together.
Which we do. Jurgen eschews accordion for keys. We go fast, slow, loud, quiet, drum led, bass led, keys led, whatever. It’s all made up on the spot. You couldn’t whistle it, but it’s good. Damo wails. We all imagine ourselves in some German cellar with a lot more hair. The experiment seems to have worked, our own wish is that we’d recorded it, but we’re okay with that, with letting the fleeting sounds escape the room, escape us, escape the whole constructs around us and fly. Fly. Fly. Away with you. We’re burned out by it all. Tired. Enervated. So we head to the Palace to play some pool with Damo. He’s a good bloke. We simply must do it again some time. If of course Damo was ever contactable..
